Charles M. Evans was appointed the first dean after being established as part of Public School District U-46. This historic appointment signifies a powerful commitment to excellence and sets the stage for a transformative educational journey. In ECC’s 2nd semester (Fall 1949), 25 students were enrolled, and the college offered 21 different courses.
1950 - Orchestra program created
In 1950, the Elgin Community College Board of Education made the decision to create an orchestra program known as the Elgin Civic Symphony Orchestra. Interestingly, the most popular non-credit course at ECC in the past 75 years has been Choir, boasting a total enrollment of 3,065 students.
1950 - Renner named Dean
In 1950, Elgin Community College (ECC) became an American Association of Junior Colleges (AAJC) member and appointed Gilbert I. Renner as its dean. Renner, who had previously served at Elgin High School, brought his leadership to ECC, expanding the faculty and nurturing lasting friendships within the community. Renner's dedication earned him the admiration of both faculty and students. Additionally, in 1950, the population of Elgin was 43,534.
1951
ECC celebrated its first graduating class of 22 students and held its first spring prom to celebrate. This celebration weaved together laughter, music, and dreams, marking the perfect finale of an extraordinary chapter.

Elgin Community Theater was officially organized in the early 1950s, making it one of the oldest community theaters in the region.
1952 - Enrollment in ESL grows to 1,000
Fifty students enroll in English as a Second Language - ESL- courses in the evening program. Enrollment reached 1,000 people 12 months later in 1953.
1954
Elgin School District residents contribute $50 per semester towards ECC tuition fees. ECC introduced its initial non-credit course in Spring 1954, attracting two enrolled students. Before 1957, the sole credential offered by ECC was a "Certificate of Graduation." By the Fall of 2023, students were offered 540 distinct courses to choose from.

In its inaugural year of offering programs of study in 1957, Elgin Community College (ECC) presented 35 certificates and 26 Associate degrees. Associated Students, one of the six student clubs and organizations, sponsored the "Emeraude" prom at Villa Olivia Country Club.
A crowning moment for the ECC prom
Featured in the June 1, 1959 edition of the Courier News, this photograph captured the crowning moment of Al Van Thurnau and Janet Miller as the chosen King and Queen of the Elgin Community College prom. Joining them in the spotlight were attendants Caroline Gromer and Paul Plath. The festive occasion unfolded at the Villa Olivia Country Club, attracting many guests to celebrate this memorable event.
1959 - Renner Hall Dedicated
ECC celebrated the successful 1957 referendum to renovate Renner Hall at 373 East Chicago Street in Elgin. The building was purchased for $41,902 in 1958 and later became known as Renner Hall. The Vets Club launched their inaugural project, a car wash on Chicago Street.
